Mr Correia grew up in Auckland and attended Medical School at  the University of Auckland and graduated with distinction in 2006.

He undertook Neurosurgery training across major teaching hospitals in New Zealand and Australia and was made a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2017.

He undertook further sub-specialist training in the United Kingdom, completing fellowships in Skullbase and Neuro-Oncology surgery at the University of Cambridge in 2017 and Cerebrovascular Surgery at King’s College Hospital in London in 2018, and returned to take up a Consultant position at Auckland City and Starship Children’s Hospital in late 2018.

Mr Correia’s public practice encompasses a high percentage of complex operations with a focus on Skullbase and Vestibular Schwannoma surgery, cerebrovascular, and complex brain tumour surgery. He was comprehensively trained at Addenbrooke’s Cambridge University Hospital in undertaking awake surgery for eloquent brain tumours. In addition, he also undertakes general, trigeminal neuralgia and spinal Neurosurgery including spinal instrumentation.

Mr Correia, together with Mr Michel Neeff (ENT), developed and chair the first and only Lateral Skullbase and Neurofibromatosis Type II Multidisciplinary Meeting in New Zealand which incorporates multispecialty consultant input from Neurosurgery, ENT Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiology, Genetics and Ophthalmology.

He has been appointed by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Neurosurgery Society of Australasia as the supervisor of Neurosurgery training in Auckland since 2019 and three of his trainees have since graduated as Neurosurgeons.

Mr Correia has a strong interest in Academics and is the Co-director of the Neurosurgery Research Unit (NRU) at The University of Auckland and supervises basic science, computational and translational Neuroscience research at the University of Auckland alongside Professor Mike Dragunow and Sir Richard Faull. He has a keen interest in brain tumour biology, the development of novel therapeutics and the utility of Artificial Intelligence in predicting growth and spread of brain tumours. A list of his publications can be found here.

Mr Correia places great importance in clear communication with patients and their family to ensure they are fully counseled and can make good treatment decisions together.
